Always prepare and learn

It takes effort and energy to contribute and create something new. You can be the one who solves the complex problem within your team, and you can do that consistently. Sure, it’s easy to deliver once, but how do you do it day in an day out?

The trick is being prepared. You have to get into the habit of being prepared for what’s coming your way. The basic reality is that creative work can be somewhat predictable year to year. You know what you’re working on now, and you know the process it takes to finish the work. You also know that by the time you’re done with your project, there is likely to be another, and another… and so on.

Getting ahead of the game and educating yourself can only be beneficial. Foresight and learning becomes opportunity for not just personal growth, but for professional growth. It’s possible to be the one ready for the next project even before it kicks off. It’s also possible to learn about the adjacent groups to learn about their needs, thus providing further insight into what needs to be delivered.

So, prepare. Prepare and learn. Always. In the best case scenario, you’re a more effective contributor - and at worst, you’ve learned something new.
