Design as platform

When you’re starting a brand or a company, you need something to rebel against. A cause. A reason d’etre. A reason to exist. A reason to work yourself and commit to succeed. That purpose can be anything. It can be as simple as bringing better design and solution to an existing problem - or it can be as big as helping people in need or making the “world a better place”.

What can be encouraging is that design alone can be a platform for existence. Design combined with design thinking can help put companies and brands on the map. It can solve problems. It can be successful. It can be meaningful.

Look at Nest, Aesop, Herschel, Vitsoe, Fiskars, The new Volvo. It can work. Yes, it requires a lot of other components to be right - but good design can be a platform.

Sometimes it difficult to find your purpose, but if you’re making good design - you’re improving the lives of those who use it. It can be aplatform to start with and build something great.
